ARTIST BIO Interview by Chris Donham “We don't make mistakes, just happy little accidents..... Everything is possible here. This is your little universe.” -Bob Ross Travis Morley was born and raised in Houston, and currently resides in Los Angeles. His passion for art making started at a very early age and has continually taken him to the extremities of the subconscious, coalescing life and art as inseparable and symbiotic necessities. As a self taught artist working in the heart of Downtown Los Angeles, Travis finds materials and ideas in every aspect of his surroundings; what some see as trash, he intuitively sees as a form functioning as the exterior architecture of an inner emotive condition– a chair functioning as a mood or a rusty structure functioning as an atmosphere. His work brings to life an organic feel by using a mixture of recycled objects combined with his own experimentally sculpted creatures and textures. Travis’ use of found objects in a form of assemblage art-making metaphorically dictates his process by assembling and reassembling ideas from his background in mechanical & computer engineering, electronics, music composition, percussion & rhythm and observing the patterns of life’s intricacies. Travis believes in an intuitive process by creating for the moment, a method that facilitates a certain cerebral fluidity. Believing there is always something waiting within his eye’s horizon makes each step flow into the next. His creative effort naturally allows him to remain conscious of who he is, reminding him how humans have the ability to evolve with no restraints. Art is Travis’ means of such evolution. Creations by Travis are a continual process of trial and error, yet there are never any negative outcomes, only happy accidents. These happy accidents are the gems of art making that continually remind artists why they began to make art. Thinking in terms of happy accidents has become a personal philosophy in which Travis lives his life and will continue to be his sense of optimistic creativity. When asked what art means to Travis’ personal life, his response was docile yet certain: “Art is my Yoga”. |
